Marie Claire's The Parcel: Spring Edit unboxed and reviewed

I know this is a bit late but I've been busy with exams and work so I'm just going to go ahead and review the products as I describe them as I've already tried them all.
Firstly, I'm not that impressed with their customer service and will talk about why after the unboxing and review so you can ignore it if you wish.

Ok, here's what I got:

Lancome Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector. RRP: $97 for 30ml (Holy Shit Son!) Sample Size
This is nice, absorbs well and smells great but no frickin way would I ever pay this amount of money for this. It also says it takes 6 weeks to see results. I have been using this on and off for 2 weeks and I'm already half way through it. I feel that if you are asking people to pay this much for a product, you should at least provide them with enough of a sample to see if it actually does what it claims to (correct wrinkles, pores and the skins texture).

Revlon ColorStay Moisture Stain. RRP $25.95. Full size
I got an orange one which I'm not hugely chuffed about. My heart actually sank when I saw it but if I use it sparingly it looks sort of natural so that's ok. I'm just using it for work when I don't want to have too much colour on my lips. It applies nicely and doesn't smell which is great. I also love the packaging, I honestly think it's beautiful. It almost makes it look as though the product is actually luminous. I don't think I would ever be able to pay this much for a lip product, but I might consider another colour if I see it reduced (heavily) some day.

Gwen Stefani by O.P.I. Nail Laquer. RRP $19.95. Full size
I got the shade I Sao Paulo Over There and it is a whopping 15ml product. I love this. It's hands down my favourite product in the box. It is a really nice browny, mauvy, grayey colour and changes depending on the lighting. It wears really well and dries really quickly. I have nothing negative to say about this. When I heard they were based on Gwen Stefani I didn't think there'd be a shade I'd wear but this has been on my toes (can't wear nail polish at work) since I got the box.

Benefit They're Real Push-up Liner (RRP $35) and Mascara (RRP $38) Sample sizes
I actually found the liner really difficult to use and made a real mess. Because it is no-budge, said mess was difficult to clean up and I ended up having to take off all my make-up and start again. In order to remove it fully, I also had to rub my eye raw. I have the Rimmel waterproof gel liner and I did a swatch of each of these side-by-side, left them to dry and then tried to smudge them. They both performed the same way and the Rimmel one is easier to use and about a third of the price. I'll be sticking with the Rimmel. Not saying this is a bad product, just that I'm a tight-arse and don't really see the point in spending heaps on one thing when I can get a product that's just as good for much cheaper.
The mascara I'm a little upset about. I tried it, loved the formula and the brush (it went on beautifully, no clumps), but it stuck terribly to my eyelash curler. I know, I know. You curl before you put on mascara and I do. Unfortunately, my ridiculous eyelashes are so stubbornly straight that I have to curl afterwards. . .several times. It just made the curl come out and pulled out some of my lashes as well. I really liked it otherwise so for those of you who have normal eyelashes, this is a winner. I can honestly say that, prior to the curling catastrophe, this is the best mascara I have ever used.

L'Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Purse-Size Hairspray. RRP $4.95
I have to say I'm a bit annoyed about this one. I've used it before and you can get it anywhere. It's not new, hard to get or expensive. I would expect this in some of the other subscription boxes but they don't pretend to be high end. I expected something other than run of the mill hairspray from Marie Claire. Having said that, it is a good hairspray and I will use it, I'm just not excited about it.

Bonus Product: Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner. RRP $4.99 for 200ml. Sample sizes
If you are subscribed to any Australian beauty box, you will have (or will soon) received this. I'm not a huge fan of Pantene given their careless attitude towards the health of the hair of their customers. I used this because I had them and they were only small. I thought I'd only get three days out of them but they actually lasted me a week. They smell great (I've had the empty box sitting on my desk so my study smells nice) and they do make your hair feel lovely. Unfortunately, Pantene is not a brand that I want to support, or even trust, so I won't be buying these products.

Anyway, that's the box. There were a few misses but in all I like most of the products and will use all of them except the liner - which I will give to my very excited sister - so I'd say that's a win. The other thing I thought was great was that any info/ingredients lists not included on the product packaging were listed inside the sleeve the box came in. Both the sleeve and the product card also had my name printed on them, which was also a nice, personalised touch.
I'll be unsubscribing after I receive the Summer Edit purely because of my experience with their customer service. They debited payment for the Summer Edit 2 months early and without notice. It took 3 emails and eventually 1 phone call before I even knew why this had happened. I was already annoyed that they failed to respond to my emails, then had to wait on hold for 30 minutes (wasting my credit for their mistake), and was not apologised to and was not even asked if I wanted my money returned to me and then debited again on the correct date. I was told that this had happened to other customers, so I don't understand why they didn't contact people to let them know what had happened. For me, someone taking money unannounced is just not on. Then to receive no apology and no offer to remedy the situation has really rubbed me the wrong way. I was going to unsubscribe for the Summer Edit and see what was in it before I bought it so I am pissed off that that option was taken from me. Their failure to contact customers despite knowing that this occurred was the last straw for me i'm afraid.

Violet Box September 2014: Review

I received this box on the Wednesday 1st October, not too late but I would still have liked to have gotten my first Violet Box in the month of the box but oh well. I was still excited to get it even though I already knew what was in it and knew it would not be my favourite box. Anyway, here is what was inside and what I thought of it:

Scandalous Rock Chick Wave Spray. Full size 150ml RRP: $17.95

I'm very glad I got the Wave Spray and not the other possibility, the Dry Shampoo. I don't use dry shampoo but will use this one spray. I am currently growing out a very short cut so don't really have enough hair to test it yet. I did use it and un-surprisingly it really didn't do too much. The smell is ok, although a little strong for me. Not nice enough to want to inhale my hair but also not aweful enough for me to want to remove it and place it as far from my face as possible either. I have a natural wave in my hair and love to use things that will enhance it without making it crunchy. I'm a bit user of beach sprays and tousle-type sprays so will be very interested in what this one will do for me. I'll probably do an individual review of this spray in a few months when I have enough hair to see what it does.
Oh, forgot to mention that the packaging is great, I love black beauty products!

Foltene Nail Treatment. Full Size RRP:$29.95

Unfortunately I have annoyingly strong nails that grow super fast (unlike my poor hair) so I won't be using this one. My sister has been trying to strengthen her nails recently so I have gifted this to her. She will let me know how she goes with it.

Girlactic Eyeshadow in Flame RRP: $23.00

I got the colour 'flame' which is a burnt orange. It feels nice and soft and is quite
pigmented. I'm still pale coming out of winter so its a bit orange for me now but I think it will look good when I have had a bit of sun. I love golds and browns so I think this one will fit right in to my current collection.

Starlooks Ultra Olive Gem Pencil. Full Size RRP:$21.50

This is a nice green colour and is really sparkly. I would actually have liked a little less sparkle and a bit more colour as it is really light. I have green eyes and was really excited when I saw we were getting this. I like it, just not as much as I thought I would. I'm thinking of getting a dark green eyeliner and then going over it with this pencil.
It is incredibly soft and easy to use, it goes on very well. I usually stay away from pencils as I find them a bit hard - not really a fan of stabbing myself in the eye over and over so I just find liquid/gel eyeliners a bit more user-friendly.

Polished London Nail Enamel. Full Size RRP:8.00

Unfortunately I got this is what was probably the only colour I would never wear. It was a baby pink colour and made my skin look jaundiced. My neice loved it though so this was gifted to her. I did try it on one nail and it seemed to take ages to dry, and once dry it seemed quite soft. I don't know if this is how it actually goes on though because it was one nail, one time so don't base any opinions on that.

The Verdict
I think you can probably see why this one isn't going to be my favourite box. Despite some of the items being a bit of a miss for me, they were all full sized which made it a great value box. None of the items will go to waste though as I always have willing recipients in my very female family which is great. I'm looking forward to playing with the eye make-up, and the wave spray once i stop growing nails and start growing some hair! Overall, I'm happy enough with this box and look very forward to getting my next one. Hopefully in October, but it doesn't matter too much if its not. Still fun!

Hi everyone, this will be a short post as I have serious time constraints this week but I don't want to miss the opportunity to get involved in this. Ryan from Cactus Skincare contacted me recently to invite me (and all their past and future customers) to get involved in an intiative to raise awareness of human trafficking. To get involved all you have to do is take a selfie wearing the White Clay Mask and post it on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag 'MercyMask'. Include a fact about human trafficking in your post.

To save time, here is the information Ryan sent me:

Native Beauty Box: Spring 2014: Review

A couple of days ago I received my very first Native Beauty Box and I was very excited to try it. There was a good variety of products, although I was (and still am) a little disappointed that there were no make-up items. I've been dying to try some cruelty-free brands. There was also no information included regarding where you can purchase the items and no company websites provided. I suppose they are all available in their online shop. In any case, here's what was in the box:

Natralus Aloe Vera Gel: RRP: $4.45 for 30ml.

I got two 2 ml sample sachets. I have received a 20ml sample tube in my September Nature's Beauty Bag so I already know I like this product. It is 100% Aloe Vera and doesn't leave that aweful sticky residue other comparable products do. I have put these sachets in my two most-used handbags for hot summer outings.

Sukin Hand and Nail Cream:

On the leaflet it says that this was supposed to be Hydrating Body Lotion RRP: $12.95 for 250ml. I am actually very happy with the hand cream. I already have the body lotion and a number of other Sukin products, but have never tried this product so I'm much happier with this one. It is a nice, faint almost jaffa-y scent and absorbs well without leaving skin feeling greasy.

Nature's Organics Sensitive Face Scrub: RRP $6.95 for 100ml

Not sure if the full size of 100ml is a typo as I received a whopping 150ml of this stuff. It is a very thick exfoliating scrub which lathers nicely. The exfoliating beads are small and gentle so you don't scratch your face while getting a good lather up. It is also scentless and leaves skin feeling soft and clean.I've been using this daily for a few days and I really like how creamy it feels. I think for this price I would definitly re-purchase this product.

Australian Bush Flower Essences Love System Gentle Face Wash Serum: RRP: $19.95 for 200ml

This is a 20ml sample. It has a runny, shampoo-like consistency and smells of lemon with a hint of honey-ness to it. This hint of honey transforms it from being a light feeling cleanser to feeling quite heavy so it would be great for the cooler months. I personally think it might be a bit heavy for hot weather. It also kind of smells to me a bit like cough lollies (probably doesn't help that I currenlty have a cold!). This one cleanses like any other cleanser so I don't really have too much to say about that.

Gypsy Rose 2 in 1 Shampoo (with bonus face soap and DVD): RRP $17.90 for 200ml.

I'm not sure how much is in the sample I got but it does seem to quite a generous one. It claims to be pH balancing and doesn't require conditioner. It is also meant to increase time required between washes. I must admit that this product doesn't really appeal to me. It's quite a murky, watery looking thing and you have to do two washes normally and three for the first time (may as well be conditioning)The brochure is difficult to read and I won't be watching the DVD as I barely have time to write this up. I will update this if I do end up using it but it seems to be labour-intensive to me and I like my current Sukin shampoo and conditioner. I know it seems ridiculous to not use something you get but it just looks a little weird and I don't like how poorly written the brochure is (it lacks clarity). It just doesn't instill me with the necessary faith in the product I need to actually put it on my head. I think I will need to see some reviews before I use this one. I will probably use the face soap though and will update this once I've given it a go.

Go Green At Home Eco Toothbrush: RRP $39.95 for 12

So excited about this product. I actually really wanted to get one of these babies but didn't think that I would given how expensive they are. It's bamboo with black bristles. They head is quite small and has a soft-medium strength brisle. I love this baby. It seems to massage my gums a bit more than my usual toothbrush and just feels nicer to hold as well. I'm a little disappointed that it has been made in China as I thought all the products in this box were made in Australia. I love this toothbrush though, it's excellent and looks amazing!

Pure by Phytocare Pure Papya Ointment with Lip Applicator: RrP: $5.95 for 10g

This is a full-size itme which soothes, moiturises and protects your lips. It is a nice, thick texture, slightly thinner than paw paw ointment and conseqently a little less heavy. It has only a very faint smell which is quite pleasant. I needed a lip treatment so I am very happy to receive this. I also really like the applicator and the packaging is attractive as well. I sometimes find paw paw ointment a little heavy and greasy so this one is much nicer to use.

Anerah Skincare Rejuvenating Mineral Mask: RRP: $22.00 for 30ml

I'm not sure how much this is as its a powder and has no weight written on it. You just mix a teaspoon of it with waster and paint it on. I've not used this one yet but I have used clay masks in the past and found them to be brilliant so I'm very excited about this product. I'll update this once I've given it a go.

The Verdict

I'm very pleased with what I've recieved in this box. It think it's a great value box with a wide range of products. I like that there are some full size products in there and all the samples are very generous sizes.
I like the philosophy behind this box. The only thing I'm not 100% happy with is the lack of a make-up item, especially when there are great Australian companies who meet the requirements (Cherry Brown, Maeve Cosmetics, Adorn Cosmetics). This is a new box however, so hopefully there will be a cosmetic appearance in the future. I must say that I'm excited to see what the Summer box will bring.
